Dr. Pat Goodson and the Scientific Literature

It's the New Year and we start with Dr. Pat Goodson joining us in the studio.  Dr. Goodson is a writing expert and leads us in a discussion about what is 'scientific literature'.  Why do we trust the scientific literature  and why is it important for us to know about it?  If you want to be able to figure out what is true or not in sports science, this is a fun conversation and one that will make you think.

Great Job Dr. Goodson,

"So what?" "Where is it going? Who is going to read it? What are you going to say? How can we use that finding, research or bit of knowledge and make it usefu?" Wow! Right from the start, just down to solid writing. I also agree with the good doctor - if you know what you are talking about, you can skip the jargon a tad. I once had a Movie Producer say to me: " You know, if people come to me and say: "I have this great script..." I interrupt them , and say; "In one sentence, tell me what it is about. " If they can't put it in one sentence, it is not a great script, and they don't know what they are talking about. "
Seems to fall right in with what Dr. Goodson was saying. Script people do get paid better however. LOL I enjoyed this podcast, not for the simple direct answers and advice, which I did enjoy, but also, because if flowed so effortlessly. Just two smart people having an intelligent discussion. I also loved when she gently chided us about thinking "Science" was above internal politics. Way to go, Doc! Have a great New year. Kevin

Not necessarily, it's more about entertainment than anything. Those who don't have the brain mechanisms for thinking analytically (usually those who excel at math). It is really nice how Scientific Literature gives a lot of things for us to think about in the near future.

Overall, most surveyed researchers indicate that they have adequate access to the scientific literature and that access conditions are generally improving. So, thank you for the post.
