Dr. Ed Howley

“How Much Exercise Is Enough?”

Dr. Howley received the B.S. degree in physical education from Manhattan College and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Wisconsin, Madison.  He then completed a one-year post-doctoral appointment at Penn State University and was hired in 1970 as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Dr. Howley taught classes in exercise physiology and in fitness testing and prescription, and has co-authored textbooks in both areas. He retired in 2007 and holds the rank of professor emeritus.

A good bit of Dr. Howley’s professional life was dedicated to service. Recently, he served as a member of the Science Board of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. In addition, in 2007-08 he served on the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee that evaluated the science related to physical activity and health. The Committee completed a report for use by U. S. Department of Health and Human Services to write the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Most of Dr. Howley’s volunteer efforts have been with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He was actively involved in the development of its certification programs, and served as President in 2002-03. He recently served as Editor-in-Chief of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal and as Chair of the program planning committee for the annual ACSM Health & Fitness Summit meeting. In 2007 Dr. Howley was recognized for his contributions with the ACSM Citation Award.

Dr. Howley likes to golf, ride his bike, swim a little, travel, and play with his grandchildren.
